To step out of the routine of lunches, the hurry of the morning and the homework schedule is such a welcome break. But now what? When the children finish school for the year they need time to unwind just like their parents do on their break. We liked to start the holidays with long mornings of being in our pj’s and having a late breakfast of pancakes. Our daughter’s kids call it “chillax” - a day when the family can chill out and relax together. We would probably watch a movie together, play cards or Wii, read and just let the children play. This is rest. In our society there is very little rest. Rest according to the dictionary is to cease from motion, labour or exertion, to be quiet or still; to have your mind de-clutter and be free from stress. For a child it is vital that they just stop and learn to rest or “chillax”! A day or two to detox from the school demands is a great way to start your summer holiday.
After you have done this, the planning will set in. There will be places to go and people to see. But the best thing you can do for your children is to teach them the pleasure and joy of “chillax”.
